In defence of the king

[BATE, George].
Elenchus motuum nuperorum in Anglia; simul ac juris regii et parlamentarii brevis enarratio.

Frankfurt, Samuel Broun, 1650. 4to. Wrappers. 114, (2 blank) pp.

Pamphlet on the rise and progress of the contemporary troubles in England by George Bate (1608-1669), who calls himself Theodorus Veridicus at the end of the preface. After his medical studies in Oxford, Bate became Med. Dr in 1637 and he soon obtained practice. He was at first thought a puritan, but on the establishment of the Court at Oxford he attached himself to the royal party, and was made a physician to the King. During the interregnum he became physician to Oliver Cromwell. The Restauration found him a royalist again and he started working for Charles II. He was one of the earliest fellows of the Royal Society and had some share in the authorship of two medical works.
The present political work is said to be entirely his own, although he published the work anonymously. It was apparently first printed in Paris (=London?) in 1649. A second edition appeared in Edinburgh in 1650, both in 12mo, and in the same year this edition in Frankfurt. It was added to and republished many times and its bibliography is very obscure. It is, in part at least, a Latin version of a work also attributed to him: The Royal Apology, or the declaration of the Commons in Parliament 11th February 1647 canvassed (London 1648). Both are defences of the king's acts in his quarrel with the parliament, and profess to be drawn up from authentic records. Bate praises Charles I in this work with the warmth of a client.

Good copy.
Only one copy located in BMC!; cf. Dictionary of National Biography, 3 (1885), p. 390.
