Rare auction-catalogue published by Pierre François Basan, a well known Parisien engraver. But Basan was even better known as a publisher of engravings and he published many important works of prominent engravers of his days. He not only published but also organised many famous art sales, among which were the ones of Bouchardon, J.-B. Le Prince, Van Loo and Mariette. The last one of which the present work is a catalogue.
The collection of Mariette comprised paintings, designs, sculptures, miniatures, antique engraved stones, engravings and books on architecture, painting and other arts. This catalogue contains a part of the vast collection, namely the engravings from the Italian, Flemish and French schools and some of the art books. In a very neat and precise handwriting many of the numbered items have marks and numbers written in the margins, clearly the notes of the owner of the catalogue who attended the sale, or at least the previews.
