The story of an Irish convict in the penal colony of New South Wales
BARRINGTON, George.Voyage a Botany-Bay, avec une description du pays, des moeurs, des coutumes et de la religion des natifs. ![]() ![]() Paris, Desenne, 1798. 8vo. Modern grey boards, black title label on spine. XVI, 192 pp. First French translation after the third English edition of this classic in the field of travel accounts on Australia. George Barrington, born in Ireland, was a pickpocket who was caught and sentenced several times before he was finally deported to New South Wales in 1791, a penal colony at the time. During the voyage, he helped to suppress some mutinied prisoners, which provided him with special treatment from the guards. At their arrival in New South Wales, he was chosen to guard the other convicts, and later he even received some land to cultivate. At the end of the eighteenth century, the European public was extraordinarily interested in New South Wales and the fate of the transported convicts. To satisfy this large public, publishers compiled works on these subjects from scattered contemporary sources. How much of the extensive literature attributed to Barrington is actually his own work, therefore, will always be a matter for conjecture. It is generally accepted, however, that his contribution was minimal, if it even existed at all. But even if the whole "Barrington" canon is a concoction from other sources, the 80 entries in Ferguson demonstrate the great popularity that these accounts had at the time. And even if Barrington didn't provide all of the information himself, the works still provide a considerable amount of details of eighteenth-century New South Wales not available in any other form. Good copy.
