Contemporary mottled calf with two floral gilt borders with gilt centre piece on both sides, spine gilt in compartments, gilt binding edges, marbled endpapers, g.e. With engraved allegorical frontispiece by S. Fokke with the 'Sol justitiae', the emblem of the Utrecht University at the top. (4), 76, (4, the last 2 blank) pp.

Prestigious copy, beautifully bound by a known bindery in Utrecht of a juridical dissertation on the use and mis-use of fate, fortune or change in lawsuits by Willem Philip Barnaart, a son of a noble family from Haarlem who dedicated his thesis to Willem Barnaart, Canon of the chapter of St. Mary at Utrecht.
This large paper copy is bound by the so-called 'Dissertation Bindery' at Utrecht which was active from 1673 till 1800 and which was the most important bindery in Utrecht at the time, certainly in terms of volume. 13 luxury bindings on Utrecht dissertations are known. Our copy resembles most nr. 335 (C 1555) in Storm van Leeuwen's Dutch decorated bookbinding in the Eighteenth century, vol. IIB.
