(27), 129 lvs. Two beautifully produced and extremely rare schoolbooks in one volume. Ad 1: The first enlarged edition of the "XLII Dialogi", originally published in 1524, by the famous humanist Hadrianus Barlandus, or Adriaan Van Baarland, (1486-1538), professor at the newly founded Collegium Trilingue at Louvain. The short educational dialogues treat a remarkable wide range of subjects, such as a walk in the country, the danger of going to study in Lutheran Germany, the use of the theatre, the vanity of the astrologers, the reading of the poets, much to prefer above the quibbling of the sophists, the advantage of caring for the education of a merchant's son above that of a son of a prince, hunting in France, the profession of a courtesan, the meaning of some passages by Virgil and the letters by Pline, the use of Erasmus's dialogues for school children, the avarice of the clergy, the game of balls, etc. The dialogues were composed to teach the Latin language to Barlandus' pupil Charles de Croy, to which the book also is dedicated. They contain interesting information on the customs and the morals of the time. Ad 2: First edition with the beautiful woodcut border on title by Hans Holbein of the famous work by the Italian humanist Angelo Poliziano (1454-1494), originally published at Florence in 1489. Poliziano was the protegee of Laurence de Medici and for some time tutor of his sons, one of whom became Pope Leo X. The book contains observations on classical authors, in Greek and Latin, an extensive preface addressed to Laurence de Medici, and several indices. It is well produced, and finely printed in Italic and Greek types, with legenda in the margins. Fine copy.- (Binding sl. stained; few old ink annotations).
