Barlaeus translating and contributing to Jacob Cats' most famous work on marriage
BARLAEUS, Caspar [& Jacob CATS, Cornelius BOYUS & Jacobus LYDIUS].Faces augustae, sive poematia, quibus illustriores nuptiae, à nobili & illustri viro, D. Jacobo Catsio, Eq. & praepot. Holl. ac Frisiae Occidentales Ord. Syndico, antehac belgicis versibus conscriptae. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Dordrecht, Hendrik van Esch for Matthias Havius, 1643. 4 parts in one vol. 8vo. Contemporary overlapping vellum. Printer's device on title, 14 half-page engravings in the text, 2 signed by Crispijn van den Queborn, woodcut and typographical head- and end-pieces, woodcut initials. (60), 272, 149, (3), 32, 198 pp. Original edition of the adaption/translation by the well-known Neo-Latin Dutch poet and scholar Caspar Barlaeus (1584-1648) of perhaps the most important, and certainly the most popular work by the famous poet and Statesman Jacob Cats ('Vadertje Cats' (Father Cats), 1577-1660). The genesis of this translation is very complicated. Almost half of the text had been already printed (in 8vo) in 1638 as it must have been the intention of Cats to publish this translation into Latin along with the first edition of his Werelts begin, midden, eynde, besloten in den Trou-ringh, met den Proef-steen van den selven in 1637. Due to illness and other occupations of trhe Amsterdam professor Barlaeus, who stood in the center of both Neo-Latin and Dutch poetry, it lasted till 1643 (in fact till the summer of 1644) before the printing of the Faces Augustae (Solemn wedding torches) was finished, containing also translations by the Hague lawyer Cornelis Boyus (Boey). Shortly thereafter an edition in 4to was published by the same printer. In total thirteen of the twenty-nine stories of the Trou-ringh have been translated (pp. 1-272); with a separate pagination (pp. 1-32) there is Barlaeus' translation of the 'Bruyloft-gedicht'. In between are the six dialogues written by Barlaeus about marriage with Wicquefort, P.C. Hooft, Daniel Mostard (Simapius), Const. Huygens, Cats himself and J. le Petit, thus bringing together the entire litarary elite of the Dutch Golden Age (pp. 1-149). Added to most copies of the Faces Augustae (as in our copy) follows the 'Sermonum convivalium libri duo. Quibus variarum gentium mores ac ritus in uxore expetenda, sponsalibus contrahendis, nuptiisque faciendis ac perficiendis enarrantur' by the minister Jacobus Lydius (ca. 1610-1679; NNBW 8, cols. 1086-7). The 14 plates are copied from the 50 plates of the 4to edition of the Trou-ringh by Crispijn van den Queborn, D. van Bremden and A. Matham. Two of them are still signed by 'CvQ'; Crispijn van den Queborn (Hollstein XVII, p. 274, nr. 93). Good, partly uncut copy.- (Partly with faint damp staining).
