Amsterdam, Jan Leendertz., (ca. 1870). Sm.8vo. Orig. richly gilt and black-stamped illustrated red cloth. With 4 chromo-lithographed plates by Gebr. Braakensiek. 182, (2) pp.

Nicely illustrated children's travel book, published in the series "De Nederlanders in Oost en West, te Water en te Land" by Johan Hendrik van Balen (1851-1921). Like Andriessen before him, Van Balen was a prolific writer of children's books on Dutch national history, but Van Balen more still than Andriessen stressed the realistic facts of daily life in the past, and depicted not only bad characters among the enemies of the Dutch but also among the Dutch themselves and among the Asian people. The latter were in children's books mostly depicted as poor and dependent, but good and very grateful for every kind gesture towards them.

Good copy.- (One quire loose and sl. dam.).
