Two dissertations on an important cult of Venus

BALBI, Ambrogio.
Dissertazioni risguardanti il culto di Venere Ericina.

Turin, Widow Pomba and sons, 1824. 8vo. Half green morocco, spine ribbed and gilt, with the gilt coat of arms of J. Gomez de la Cortina, better known as the marquis de Morante, a well-known Spanish bibliophile, on both covers, sprinkled edges. 90 pp.

Two dissertations by Ambrogio Baldi on the Venere Ericina, an important cult of Venus, published for the first time as a couple. The first one, with the title Il culto di Venere Ericina rivendicato ad erice re di Sicilia suo vero institutore, on pp. 7 to 56, describes the Sicilian origines of the cult, the second one, Dissertazione sopra una lapide inscritta da silla a Venere Ericina, on pp. 57-90, deals with an inscribed memorial stone originating from the Sicilian sanctuary at mount Erice. The first dissertation was published here for the first time, the second had already appeared in 1807, but only in a few copies.
Good copy of a very rare work with the bookplate of the Bibliotheca Cortiniana on the inside front cover.
Enciclopedia Italiana 44; NUC lists 2 copies; 1 ex. München BSB; not in Cat. librorum Doct. D. Joach. Gomez de la Cortina, Madrid 1854-1862.
