Original blindstamped cloth with gilt title on spine: "Rangoon", made by J. DEAN, at the Strand. Lithographed frontispiece in a beautiful colouring showing the Burmese deputation presenting the King of Ava's letter, one lithographed plate of a vessel which the Burmese gave th name "Yathunah-gee-mhou", meaning "Precious, Sleek, Excellent sailing ship" and two folding lithographed plates, one being a coastal view of the town of Rangoon and the other showing the attack of the Dunnoo Stockade, all platesd lithographed by Martin & Hood. VII, 78 pp. Rare first edition of the first book containing the story of the second Burmese war by Rev. Thomas T. Baker who died before completing this work. Many events discribed here were taken from his own eye-witness observations. The last communication from the author is dated March 31st 1852. Baker was Chaplain of Her Majesty's ship Fox and many of his crew passed away by the epidemic cholera. The last chapter is an attempt to make a conclusion of what happened after Baker died and the story of the most important happening one month later: the capture of Martaban and Rangoon.
