Paris, Durand, 1744. Contemporary full mottled calf, spine ribbed and richly gilt in compartments, with red title label lettered in gold, gilt binding edges, marbled edges. With woodcut headpieces and 2 folding tables (530 x 85 and 460 x 310 mm). VIII, 359 pp.

First edition of this French translation by Pierre Demours (1702-1795) of the original English edition entitled An attempt towards a natural history of the polype by Henry Baker (1698-1744) published in 1743. In 1742 there was a considerable interest amongst fellows of the Royal Society - of which Baker had been a member since 1741 - in the freshwater polyp (Hydra viridis) as a result of the recent discovery and description of this animal by Abraham Trembley. Together with Martik Folkes, Baker carried out experiments on this animal, which resulted in this book. The work is divided into two parts, the first contains a description of all parts of the body of the polyp, of the way they reproduce themselves and catch their prey, of their diseases and information on where polypes can be found and on how to prepare them for the microscope. In the second part eleven experiments with polypes are described, especially on the different ways of dissecting them. Henry Baker did valuable work on the teaching of the deaf and dumb, but he is especially noted for his popularisation of the use of the microscope and for his contribution to the study of crystals. Pierre Demours was a doctor at Paris and translator of several English scientific works and author himself of a Table générale des matières contenues dans l'histoire et les mémoires de l'Académie royale des sciences (1747).

Very good copy with ownership's entry of Th. Gittard on the first fly-leave.- (Binding edges slightly rubbed).
