XI, (1), 326; (4), 293, (1 blank) pp. First French edition of a famous work on annuities and assurances by Francis Baily (1774-1844). Baily apprenticed in a London mercantile house, and from 1795 to 1798 he travelled in America. In 1799 he entered into partnership with a London stockbroker and published some highly successful works on assurances, of which the present was his most important, first published at London in 1810-1813. In the 1830's the work was also translated into French and German. But then Francis Baily had already turned his attention to astronomy. In 1820 he was one of the founders of the Astronomy Society, and he then also published some very successful works on astronomy, greatly advancing astronomic science by his revision of the star catalogues.
