(SCHNORR, H.TH.L.). Zweyter Theil. Neueste Ausgabe mit 12 Kupfern. Cologne, Peter Hammer, 1810. With 12 illustrations of Munchausen's fantastic adventures on 4 full-page engraved plates. 156 pp.

Rare edition of the Munchausen by Gottfried August Bürger (1747-1833), together with a still rarer edition of the pseudo-Munchausen by Heinrich Theodor Ludwig Schnorr (1760-1835), each  nicely illustrated with 4 engraved plates, each plate consisting of 3 pictures of the hero's crazy adventures above one another. Bürger's Munchausen had first been published in 1786, almost immediately after the first English edition by Raspe in 1786. The German translation by Bürger, by his free adaptation, and especially by his colourful and vivacious language, became an original German chapbook, quite separate from the English original.
The present edition is a rather famous new edition after Bürger's first edition of 1786. Schnorr's "Münchhausiade" first appeared in 1794, and the present is a new edition after the original of 1794 as well. At the end it includes an "Elegie auf den Tod des Freiherr von Münchhausen", who however at that time was still alive. The real Freiherr von Münchhausen died in 1797.

Good copy, with the bookplate of L.H. Dorrenboom.- (Spine rep.; pp. 153-4 of (2) misbound at end).
