Amsterdam, Timotheus ten Hoorn, 1686. 4to. Contemporary blind-stamped vellum, ribbed spine with title in ink. With etched allegorical title-page, 28 full-page and 2 folding etched plates, of which 7 by Jan Luyken, 22 by J. Lamsvelt and one signed Muld. (= Joseph Mulder?). [40], 764, [24], [4] pp.

First and only edition of this beautifully illustrated work on classical mythology, dedicated to Nicolaas Witsen and Gerard Bors van Waveren, burgomasters of Amsterdam. The author aims to show that the gods of classical mythology are all false, and that the God of the bible is the only true God. In doing so, Aysma also devotes some interesting chapters to cosmological questions, explaining the views of Ptolemy, Copernicus, Brahe and Descartes. With bookplate of Jean Grand Jean Perrenod Comtesse.
Gathering 'e' bound at the end, some slight waterstaining in first gatherings and inscription on endpaper. Very good copy.
Klaversma & Hannema 74; Van Eeghen & Van der Kellen 110.
