Don Quichotte, the pseudo sequel - in a rare Dutch translation

(16), 687, (1 blank) pp. After publishing his first part of the "Don Quichote" Cervantes waited so long before publishing the second part, that a Spanish colleague, Alfonso Fernando de Avellaneda, jumped to the occasion and published his own second part of the "Don Quichote", under the title Segundo tomo del ingenioso hidalgo don Quixote de la Mancha, first published at Tarragona in 1614. In the preface to the present Dutch edition the translator claims that Avellaneda presents much better and funnier characters than Cervantes did with his Don Quichote and Sancho Pancha. Still, when Cervantes finally published his second part he clearly showed his rival and the world who was the master. The Dutch editions of the pseudo-Don Quichote, however, are much rarer than the Dutch editions of the original Don Quichote, as only two Dutch editions of Avellaneda's continuation were published. Good, but sl. used copy.- (Binding sl. soiled, library label on spine; some sl. staining).
