An interesting and important autograph letter, signed by the Admiral Baron Albin Reine Roussin, and dated 'Rochefort 21st of August 1818'. The letter is addressed to Louis-Marie Bajot (1775-1854), the inspector-general of the libraries of the Ministry of the French Navy and editor of the Annmales maritimes & coloniales (first vol. published in 1818).
In this letter Roussin is discussing an article published in the Annales Maritimes (which had appeared earlier in the Moniteur of 13 October) in which he has found omissions, injustices and premature remarks on his survey of the African coast from Senegal to Guinea and on the works of several of his predecessors and collegues, such as for example the work of P. Labarthe, Voyage à la Côte de Guinée, où Description des Côtes d 'Afrique. Roussin published the results of his surveys a year later: Mémoire sur la Navigation aux Côtes Occidentales d'Afrique Depuis le cap Bojador jusqu'au mont Souzos,d'après les reconnaissances hydrographiques faites en 1817 (Paris, Impr. Royale, 1819). (Memoir of the Navigation to the West Coast of Africa from Cape to Mount Bojador Souzos; second edition 1827).
The letter is in very good condition.
