Important early 19th-century account on the culture of the Aborigines in Australia
[AUSTRALIA - ABORIGINES].Neuholland nach den besten Quellen geschildert. ![]() ![]() Krefeld, Abraham ter Meer, 1810. 8vo. Contemporary marbled boards, yellow edges. With contemporarily handcoloured engraved frontispiece with an Aboriginal family by L. Portman after F. Kuyper. 158, 22, (1) pp. Very rare first edition of an introductionary description of the topography, flora and fauna and the native aboriginal culture of Australia, largely based on the accounts of the Pacific voyages by Vancouver, La Billardière, Cook, Grant, Peron, Turnbull, Tuckey, Collins, Forster, etc. The work is important for the historiography of Australia and it illustrates the 19th-century prejudiced view on the Aboriginal population. In the appendix a list of the sources is given, titled ''Anmerkungen zum dritten Theile'' (Notes to the third part), which seems to imply that this work was part of a more extensive work. Another clue for this hypothesis is given at the end of the appendix where is stated that the next part will start with America. Good copy.- (Edges of binding sl. rubbed; library paper label pasted on spine, library stamp on title; some spotting and dampstains throughout).
