(6), 264; (6), 162; (1), 1-110, 110-30, (6) ff. One of the four issues of the third edition of the famous Dutch national chronicle, the so-called 'Divisiekroniek', together with the complete continuations by Ellert de Veer, with the almost ever lacking double-page engraved map of Holland in part 2. Burger knew of only 2 copies of the chronicle which contained this map. The work is beautifully illustrated with 36 woodcut portraits in the text depicting the counts of Holland in full-length. The rare double-page engraved map of Holland by Jan Pieterszoon Saenredam, dated 1589, has been especially designed and engraved for this Verhaghen edition of the 'Divisiekroniek' and consequently here in its first state. Three states of the map are known; the first with small water waves and the absence of number 36 in the lower right corner; the second with (almost) no water waves and without number, used by Cornelis Claesz. for the first Amsterdam edition (1609) of Guicciardini's description of The Netherlands. The first edition of the chronicle appeared in 1517. Of this 'Divisiekroniek' three unchanged, complete reprints were published with continuations: the second edition in 1585 by Peeter Verhaghen in Dordrecht with a continuation to 1584, followed by our third edition which was published in four issues by Peeter Verhaghen in Dordrecht together with resp. Aelbrecht Heyndricxsz in Delft or The Hague, Cornelis Claesz. and Laurens Jacobsz. in Amsterdam (TB 2991-94). Our edition contains: (part 1) Die Cronycke ... till 1517: an unchanged reprint of the first part of the 1585 edition with the same preface; (part 2) with a separate title: Het tweede deel van de Hollandtsche ende Zeelandtsche Cronycke, ... door E(llert). D(e). V(eer). (Dordrecht, Peeter Verhaghen, 1591). This part is hastily assembled by Ellert de Veer: a new continuation different from the one used in 1585. This second part is from 1515 to 1564. Its main source is the Nieuwe Cronijcke van Brabant (1564); (part 3) with the separate title: Historie ofte wijder verclaringhe van de Nederlantsche gheschiedenissen ... totten wtganghe vanden Jare 90. (Dordrecht, Peeter Verhaghen, 1590). This new continuation, also written by Ellert de Veer has an Index of 4 pp. and an appendix for the year 1590-91 of 4 pp. at the end, and includes the story of the war with Spain during the years 1566-1590 (on Ellert de Veer, see: Haitsma Mulier, Repertorium, pp. 415-6). A fourth edition was published by Peeter Verhaghen in 1595. The Divisiekroniek was composed in 3 parts and 23 divisions by the Christian humanist scholar and Augustinian monk Cornelius Aurelius who always remained true to the religious ideals of the Devotio Moderna, working in the shadow of Erasmus with whom he lived together in Paris in 1497-8. The chronicle, compiled from various older sources, is fundamental for the historiography of the Northern Netherlands. Aurelius's significance as a humanist scholar is as a writer of history imbued with a blend of unequivocal patriotism. With his new division of Holland's history into Batavian early history, the medieval history of the county of Holland and contemporary Burgundian-Habsburg history (till 1517), and with his critical research into the sources, Aurelius was able to give the inhabitants of the Northern Netherlands a new collective historical identity and the beginnings of a national consciousness. His work marks the start of the Renaissance historiography of the Northern Netherlands. Good copy.- (Small tear in leaf 230 of part 2 and leaf 56 of part 3, margins of the first leaves a bit frayed, some ugly 20th-century annotations in red referring to the family Van der Burg on four leaves).
Typ. Bat. 2994 (parts 1-2) and 2436 (part 3); Moes-Burger III, pp. 243-7; Blonk, Hollandia Comitatus, nr. 20; K. Tilmans, Historiography and Humanism in Holland in the age of Erasmus. Aurelius and the Divisiekroniek of 1517 (1992), esp. pp. 310-11.
