'Art Auction records' for Brussels, 1773-1803
![]() ![]() ![]() Brussels, N. Alexandre, (1803). 8vo. Later three-quarter vellum with title stamped on spine, boards covered with marbled paper. 320 pp. Very rare work recording all the paintings which were put up for auction in Brussels during the years 1773-1803. In fact this is a very early example of "Art Auction records", indexing 58 Brussels art sales, 1773-1803, including the collections of Count Calemberg, Baron de Heusch de Landwyck, Chevalier de Verhulst, Baron Willebroek, Mr. Regaus, James Hazard, Chanoine Wauters, Ciomte de Cuypers de Reymenam, etc. and the paintings "provenant des Couvens supprimés" (the confiscated paintings from the abolished convents and monasteries). On p. 6-8 is the list of the 58 sales, followed by the list of the more than 4000 paintings with indication of the sale, number in the sale and price fetched at auction. The 'Avertissement' on p. 3 warns that some of the low prices fetched for paintings listed under the major artists, are due to the fact that there were many copies among the paintings put up for auction. The paintings are arranged alphabetically under the names of the painters, among which great names as Pieter and Jan Brueghel, Gerard Dou, Dürer (10 paintings), Jan van Goyen, Frans Hals (5 paintings, a.o. Good, uncut copy.
Devolder C-1381; 2 copies in NUC, one in London-BL.
