Contemp. mottled calf, spine ribbed and gilt, with green title-labels, with blind-stamped triple fillet borders on sides, gilt binding edges, green and blue mottled edges. Paris, Chez J.G. Mérigot, le jeune, 1791. 152 pp. Two important book catalogues, contemporarily bound together in one volume. Ad 1. Rich auction catalogue of rare books on various subjects, theology, law, literature, history, travel, and a special large section on arts and sciences, including some 80 pages natural history. The catalogue was compiled by the Paris bookseller Guillaume de Bure and our copy probably belonged to him or to one of his staff, as prices are added to all items in brown ink in a neat small hand. Among the most valuable books were a Biblia Sacra vulgare from 1490 in a binding of Sixtus V, Historia ... Conchyliorum by Martin Lister from 1685, and Locupletissimi rerum naturalium collectio by Alb. Seba in 4 vols. The catalogue contains a total of 1812 items. The index of authors is not bound in. It was available separately on request. Ad 2. The books listed in the catalogue of Le Riche were obviously brought together for private reading rather than for reasons of bibliophily, for their beautiful plates or precious bindings. Again all prices are added by hand, in brown ink, and occasionally a note is present as well. At the end in the same hand is written: Dr. Ottas de Pays Bas. Probably he bought a lot, or it was he that wrote down the prices. Fine copies, with an old paper note mounted on inside front cover, revealing the names of the owners of the libraries sold, these names also added by the same hand on both titles.
Ad 1: Quérard, II, 415, Blogie, p. 16; Taylor, Book catalogues, their varieties & uses, 2nd. ed., p. 137.
