Bibliophile collection with many books printed on vellum

[AUCTION CATALOGUE].
Catalogue de Livres Précieux, Manuscrits et imprimés sur peau-vélin, du Cabinet de M. ** (= M. Charles Chardin).

Paris, L'Imprimerie de Leblanc, 1811. 8vo. Orig. wrappers, uncut. VI, 179, (1 blank) pp.

Rare sale catalogue of a collection of precious books, manuscripts and books printed on velum of the library of a great bibliophile of the old school, the bookseller Charles Chardin. Already in 1772 he offered for sale the Cabinet des livres rares et singuliers de M. Filheul, which were his own books, but for which he used the name of his wife. During the French Revolution he held several speeches as "citoyen de la section de Brutus", yet he was accused of being a traitor sold to the English, because he had a rich library of an Englishman for safe-keeping. The "section of Brutus" gave him on 18 November 1793 an eloquent certificate of civic spirit, and he was released by the Revolutionary Tribunal before 14 April 1794.
He was always busy buying and selling his books, only wanting the finest for himself. The catalogues he issued proved that he possessed pieces of great value. He had in his possession the Psalter of S. Louis, which came from the hands of Grandduke Nicholas and went to the Royal Library of Louis XVIII. The present sale catalogue lists no less than 590 manuscripts, among which are 82 Eastern manuscripts. Dibdin discussed Chardin at length in his Bibliographical tour through France and Germany. He then lived in the rue Ste-Anne, no. 19, but he was ill and unable to work at his collections any more. De Bure announced a sales of his books for 9 February 1824 and the next days.
Chardin was also a famous collector of porcelain, drawings, paintings, etc.

Good copy.
