ASCONIUS PEDIANUS, Quintus.Explanatio in Ciceronis orationes in C. Verrem, in orationem pro C. Cornelio, in orationem contra competitores, in orationem pro M. Scauro, in orationem contra L. Pisonem, in orationem pro Milone. Scholia Pauli Manutii. Indices Duo. ![]() ![]() ![]() Venice, (Paulus Manutius), 1563. 8vo. Modern panelled blind-stamped brown morocco in antique style with endpapers from an earlier binding, spine with 2 raised bands, both covers with blind-stamped ornamental border. WIth Aldus' woodcut printer's device on title-page. Printed in italics. [12],104 ll. Rare third Aldine edition with the commentary by Paulus Manutius of these antique, nearly contemporary commentaries on nine of Cicero's orations by Quintus Asconius Pedianus (ca. 9 BC - ca. AD 76), a Roman grammarian and historian, who was probably a native of Padua. The first edition with the 'scholia' of Paulus Manutius appeared in 1547; the second in 1553. In his later years Asconius resided at Rome, and there he died, after having been blind for twelve years. During the reigns of Claudius and Nero he compiled for his sons, from various sources shorthand reports or skeletons (commentarii) of Cicero's unpublished speeches, Tiro's life of Cicero, speeches and letters of Cicero's contemporaries, and these historical commentaries on Cicero's speeches, of which only the present nine are preserved: on (1-4) the four Orationes in Verrem (ff. 1-54), (5) Oratio pro Cornelio (ff. 55-65r), (6) Oratio contra C. Antonium, & L. Catilinam (ff. 65v-72r), (7) Oratio pro M. Scauro (ff. 72v-76r), (8) Oratio contra L. Pisonem (ff. 76v-83r), and (9) Oratio pro Milone (ff. 83v-95). These valuable notes, written in good Latin, relate chiefly to historical and antiquarian matters and are edited by Franciscus Torresanus Asulanus in the first Aldine edition of 1522. The 'scholia' by Paulus Manutius follow on ff. 96-104r. On f. 104v is the 'Series chartarum' (omitting the AA4 quire!) and the colophon. The editio princeps of Asconius Pedianus' commentary on Cicero's speeches was published in 1477. Good copy with dated ownership's entry (1606) of Ferdinand Passaria (?) on first free endpaper.
