With folding engraved frontispiece by Boilly, showing an elegant company of animals in human dress, drinking, courting and making music in a Paris Salon. XVIII, 154, (2) pp.

Collection of fables in verse, with an interesting discourse on the definition of the genre, which according to the author, French poet and playwright Antoine Vincent Arnault (1766-1834), is as old as literature itself, and is also found in Indian literature and in the Scriptures. The author also discusses the greatness of La Fontaine and if it is really necessary to imitate him. The beautiful frontispiece has a motto of Horace underneath.
The fables are divided into four books, each containing eighteen fables, all with explanatory headings, and with extensive explanatory notes added at the end. In the last note Arnault dicusses his rivals in the art of fables, of whom Ginguené, Le Bailly, and Aubert are the most formidable, but also Grenus and Du Tremblay are to be reckoned with, for the ingenious philosophy and naive simplicity of their fables respectively, and also Joliveau for his "galanterie".

Fine copy.- (One quire sl. loosening in spine).
Not in Gumuchian.
