Contemporary dark green morocco, spine ribbed and elaborately gilt and title lettered in gold, covers with gilt dentelles and gilt central coat of arms of Voyer de Paulmy d'Argenson, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, g.e. Woodcut device on title, some woodcuts in text. (2), 368, (2) pp. (368 = A-E8 pp. 1-80 + another quire E with pp. *65-80 + F-Z8 pp. 81-368). Elaborately bound almanach of the year 1724, bound for the famous French bibliophile and art collector, Marc Antoine-René de Voyer, Marquis de Paulmy and Argenson (1722-1787). In 1750 he was appointed head of stables at the court of King Louis XV, followed by an appointment as war minister in 1758. He also served as French ambassador to Switzerland, Poland and Venice. He was a noted bibliophile and collector of art. His library consisted of over 2000 volumes, mainly French writers, especially poetry, being one of the finest collections of a private individual. He sold his library to the Count Artois and this formed the basis of the collection of the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal, now one of the branches of the Bibliothèque Nationale at Paris. Fine copy, with engraved bookplate of the French chemist Antoine Laurent Lavoisier (1743-1794), the father of modern chemistry, engraved by La Gardette.
