Ravenna, Francesco Tebaldini, for Tomaso Pasini, Bologna, 1587. 4to. Contemporary vellum, ribbed spine with title label. Woodcut printer's device on title. (20), 229, (3) pp.

Rare first edition of a very important work on the techniques and traditions of painting by Giovanni Battista Armenini (1530-1609), who came from Faenza. Armenini studied art at Rome, and afterwards travelled all through Italy to study the art of painting, its techniques and its history. He finally laid down all his findings in the present, his only work. It is still recognized as a classic in its field, and is our main source on painting techniques and traditions of sixteenth century Italy. The book was republished at Venice in 1678, at Milan in 1820 and Pisa in 1823. An extensive index lists all aspects of the art of painting treated, including line, space, colour, perspective and shade, as well as techniques used by the Italian masters of the period.
Fine copy of a famous work.
