(49, 1 blank), 46; (32), 138, (6); 336, (6); 78, (4) pp. Collected poems and plays by the physician and poet Johannes Antonides van der Goes (1647-1684), here in the third edition, for the first time edited by David van Hoogstraten. It also contains the poetical work on the merchant city Amsterdam 'De Ystroom begrepen in vier boeken', his most famous poem, illustrated with five beautiful engravings by Romeyn de Hooghe, and the tragedy 'Trazil, of overrompelt Sina', both with a separate title-page. Furthermore it contains the first edition of the biography of the author written by the editor and his friend David van Hoogstraten, and many occasional poems (see below). Antonides was considered by his contemporaries as one of the greatest poets of his time. He was a friend of the 'King of Dutch poets' Joost van den Vondel who called him his 'zoon in de kunst' (his son in the arts). The first edition of his collected poems appeared posthumously in 1685, edited by his father Antony Jansz. van der Goes (Amsterdam, J. Rieuwertsz., P. Arentsz & A. Magnus), reprinted several times till far into the eighteenth century: 1705 (Amsterdam, Nic. ten Hoorn),1714 (the present edition, for the first time edited by David van Hoogstraten), 1718, 1730, 1735, 1748. (1): Title (verso blank). - pp. (3-10): Preface by David van Hoogstraten, dated 30 October 1713. - pp. (11-28): Laudatory poems by Katryne Lescailje, Petrus Francius, Pieter de la Croix, Bartolomeus van Gent and J. de Haes. - pp. (29-40): the life of Antonides van der Goes by David van Hoogstraten, including a separate half title, and the portrait of the author. - pp. (41-48): Poem on Antonides van der Goes and his wife Suzanna Bormans, including an extensive commentary. - pp. (49-50) and 1-46: Separate half-title ('Lykzangen ter gedachtenisse van Johannes Antonides van der Goers'), including funeral songs by the famous Dutch poets J. Vollenhove, Gerard Brandt, Joachin Oudaan, Joan van Broekhuizen, David van Hoogstraten (2), F. de Haes, J. van Geel, and others, and epitaphs by a.o. Constantijn Huygens, Kaspar Brandt and David van Hoogstraten. - pp.(1-32), 138, (6): Separate half title (De Ystroom), including the five plates by Romeyn de Hooghe (frontispiece and four plates to the four books; and the facing explanatory texts), the separate printed title (De Ystroom begrepen in vier boeken (Amsterdam, Nocolaes ten Hoorn, 1714; also published separately), dedication to Kornelius de Vlaming van Oudshoorn, preface, ladatory poems by Joan Six, Constantijn Huygens, Vondel (2), David van Hoogstraten, J. VollenhoveJoachim Oudaan, Gerard Brandt and others, followed by the text of this famous laudatory poem on the river IJ - modelled on Vondels 'De Rijnstroom' on the river Rhine -, containing mainy interesting passages on the fish market, the house of Michiel de Ruyter, the West-Indisch Huis, the dockyards of Amsterdam, whaling, skating, the castle Het Muiderslot where P.C. Hooft had lived, Zaandam, etc. etc. The text is followed by an index. The first edition of the Ystroom had appeared in 1671. - pp. 1-24: Bellone aen bant, of vrede tusschen Britanje, en de Vereenigde Nederlanden', dedicated to the burgomasters of Amsterdam, on the peace with England in 1667.
