Milan, Fratelli Treves, 1899. 8vo. Contemporary red morocco, gilt spine with title lettered in gold, sides with gilt ruling and cornerpieces, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers; the original green wrappers are preserved. (4), 104, (+ 15 pp. with advertisements) pp.

Second edition (the first of many editions published by the Treves brothers at Milan) of the play 'Dream of a morning in spring' by the Italian poet, journalist, novelist, dramatist and daredevil Gabriele d'Annunzio (1863-1938). The first edition had been published in Rome in 1897 as the first part of the series I sogni delle stagioni ('Dreams over the seasons') to be completed with (2) 'Sogno d'un meriggio d'estate', (3) 'Sogno d'un tramonto d'autumno', and (4) 'Sogno d'una notte d'inverno'.

The present copy was presented by the author to Magda Heinemann, née Magda Stuart Sindici, who in 1900 under the pseudonym Kassandra Vivaria, translated D'Annunzio's novel Il Fuoco ('The Flame of Life') into English. D'Annunzio wrote on the half-title: "A Magda, il suo vecchio amico, Gabriele d'Annunzio" and had signed with "Roma: marzo 1899".
D'Annunzio was a prolific author of novels plays and poems who went on to have a controversial role in politics as figurehead to the Italian Fascist movement, and mentor to Benito Mussolini. Magda Heinemann is known for her novel Via lucis and was married to the publisher Wiliam Heinemann (1863-1920).
