Antwerp, Cornelis Woons, 1654. 12mo. 19th-century blue wrappers with pasted title-label on spine. With 52 full-page woodcuts in text (ca. 88 x 63 mm), woodcut initials. 119 (1) pp.

Rare second edition of this popular devotional work by Jodocus Andries (1588-1658), a Jesuit working in Ghendt, Malines and Brussels. He was a prolific author of prayers, meditations and small devotional works. The first edition of the Necessaria was published in 1653, also at Antwerp by the same publisher, who also printed many other works by Andries. The book starts with a dedication to the archbishop of Malines, Jacobus Boonen and continues with the basic concepts, dogmata and texts of the Catholic faith: the Creed, Pater Noster, Salutatio Angelica, Ten commandments, etc., followed by the 52 woodcuts on the versos, with explication and prayer on the facing pages.
The 52 woodcuts are by Jean Cristoph Jegher (1618-1667), who also often worked for the Officina Plantiniana (16 of which signed with his monogram I.C.I), after the designs of Anthonis Sallaert (ca. 1590-1660; 'A.S.': 36x), Erasmus II Quellinus (1607-1678; 'E.Q.': 7x), Abraham van Diepenbeeck (1596-1675; 'A.V.D.': 4x), and Christ. van Sichem (1580-1658; C.V.S.': 1x). The remaining five woodcuts are unsigned.

What makes this book so interesting is the fact that on p. 15, the price of the book is explicitly mentioned: 'Pretium libelli. Hic libellus quinque foliorum & quinquaginta duarum iconum, excusus papyro proba, densa, candida emitur apud Typographum in Albis duobus assibus". (The price of this book. This book is printed on five sheets (=quire A-E) containing 52 woodcuts, executed on goof thick, white paper, and is for sale at the publisher for two 'as' (2 stuvers). The entry continues by stating that this is the price for 24 of more copies bought at the same time. A single copy costs 7 quarters (7 quadrans) of an as (= 1 3/4 stuvers). Bound in marbled paper the book costs two quarters more. Statements like this are extremely rare and very important for the economic history of the book.

Good copy, uncut.
