Parma, Ex Regio Typographeio [= Giambatista Bodoni], (colophon: 1785). Large 4to (21.5 x 29 cm). Contemporary calf, blind-tooled covers, spine richly gilt, gilt inside dentelles, silk endpapers, gilt edges; kept in drop-back box. With an engraved vignette on the title-page, engraved coat of arms of the dedicatee, Nicolaus De Azara, by Cagnoni. [4] XCIV, 100, [2] pp.

A wonderful copy of Bodoni's stately 4to edition of Anacreon's odes, with the text in Greek and the commentary in Latin. One of 250 (of a total of 310) copies on 'blue' paper. Printed entirely in capital letters, especially designed and cut for this edition, the book has an impressively august and elegant appearance. A "most beautiful book" (Updike). Bodoni printed another edition in 1791, again entirely printed in capital letters, "and more elegant and exquisitely finished productions cannot be conceived" (Dibdin).

Some light edge wear. Fine copy.
Brooks 287; De Lama, p. 35; Dibdin I, p. 265; Palaia & Moscatelli 78; Bibliotheca Braidense (1972) 35; Wittock, Bodoni 11; Giani, Cat., pp. 35-36, Nr. 3; Updike, Printing Types II, p. 172.
