Contemporary overlapping vellum with title in ink on spine. Woodcut printer's device on title, woodcut initials and endpieces. Printed in Gothic type in 2 columns. 272 (8) ff. (Collation: A-2M8). Rare second Dutch edition of this work on the fierce conflicts of the Anabaptists of Emden with the counts of Eastern Friesland. The first Dutch edition was published in Emden at Goossen Goebens in 1579 (Typ. Bat. 4104). The work is translated by Dominicus Julius from the first German edition (in Saxon dialect), printed in Emden, also at Goossen Goebens in 1579. The preface, dated March 4, 1579, is written by Johan, Count and Lord of Eastern Friesland (1538-1591). The imprint mentions 1616 as the year of printing, but the Typographia Batava places this edition in the year 1596, because of a misprint: M.D.CXVI in stead of M.D.XCVI, and Laurens Jacobsz. died in 1603. At the end of the 16th century, Emden experienced a period of boom. Because of the Spanish blockades in the Dutch harbours, Emden became the most important port for the North Sea. In the meantime, thousands of protestant refugees from the Netherlands had come to Emden, protestant since 1544, to escape the prosecutions of the Duke of Alva at the beginning of the Eighty-Years-War. During this period Calvinistic Emden came into conflict with the Lutheran counts of Eastern Friesland. With the support of the Dutch, Emden managed to become a free imperial city under the protection of the Dutch Republic. Dutch became the official language for the commerce and civilian politics. Good copy, with the bookplate of Howard Osgood pasted on inside of front cover and his signature onwritten on title.- (First lvs. a bit frayed)
