Jena, Thomas Rewart, 1558. 4to. Modern boards. Two woodcut initials. (28) leaves.

Original and only edition which is recorded in two variants; this is the first issue (VD 16, A 2381).
Nicolaus von Amsdorf (1483-1565) was among the first students to matriculate at the newly founded University of Wittemberg in the winter of 1502-3. Already in 1513 and again in 1522 he was elected rector of the University. From the beginning of Luther's public campaign Amsdorf was among his closest supporters and he accompanied the reformer to the Leipzig debate in 1519 and the famous diet of Worms in 1521. From the start he was also involved in Luther's translation of the Bible. In 1542 he was elected bishop of Naumberg, in fact the first ordination of an evangelical bishop in Germany. Later on he played a prominent role in the Reformation at several different places throughout Germany. Many conflicts were threshed out with Osiander, Melanchton, Bucer, Georg Majer and others. In 1548 he was one of the founding fathers of the Jena University where he was also the instigator of the so-called Jena-edition of the complete works of Luther. He proved himself a fierce and orthodox Lutheran who was opposed to all kinds of compromises, such as for example those proposed by Justus Menius (1499-1558), the 'bittern unwarheiten' from the title of this pamphlet. In the dispute with him during the years 1556-58 he declared even that the 'good works' did no good for, and were even contrary to the redemption of the soul. In his unyielding defence of strict Lutheran orthodoxy he was hailed by his supporters as a 'second Luther'.
The text is concluded by a judgement on Amsdorf by Johannes Pfeffinger on f. 28v.

Good copy of this very rare pamphlet. Blind stamp on title.
