First separate edition of Samuel Ampzing's treatise on Dutch orthography, originally having been published in Ampzing's famous description and praise of the city of Haarlem, in 1628. The work is still of importance today. Apart from discussing the rules of orthography, the work also contains interesting observations on the art of poetry or rhetorics, the author himself being a very gifted poet. Christiaan vander Heulen, who revised the present edition, was one of the pioneers of Dutch linguistics. A teacher and mathematician at Leiden, he himself had published a schoolbook on Dutch orthography, and in 1626 he had published the first Dutch grammar based on the Latin grammar, including the oldest Dutch dictionary of genders.
