's Grav., J.H. Munnikhuizen, C. Plaat, 1778-1779. 4 vols. 8vo. Later half vellum, uncut. With 16 full-page engraved plates by B. de Bakker after D. Chodowiecki. VIII, 436; 476; 444; 349 pp.

Rare and curious popular novel, sometimes ascribed by Dutch authorities to Thomas Amory - by Buisman, Scheepers and Knuttel -, and sometimes to the German rationalist C.F. Nicolai - by Muller, De Vries and Waller. This uncertainty no doubt arose from the fact that the book originally was published anonymously at London, in 1770, and was translated into German by C.F. Nicolai (1733-1811), who added his own observations to the book. The Dutch translation was made from the German, and included the preface signed by Nicolai, to whom the book then was ascribed. Only when the book was republished at London, in 1825, was the name of the English author revealed.
The book is rather curious. It seems to be partly autobiographical, the author himself having married eight times, again and again losing his young, beautiful and very pious wife through death. And partly the book presents elaborate and very personal theological reflections. Because of the latter the book was banned in Germany. In the Netherlands too the book was placed on the Index by the Magistrates at the Hague. And the selling of the book was forbidden by a resolution of the Court of Holland, dated June 25, 1779, on the grounds that the book was "Socinian", and scornful against religion in general. So the book now is very rare.
The illustrations for the Dutch edition were newly engraved after the beautiful German originals by Daniel Chodowiecki.

Fine set.
