First edition of this important series of illustrations of biblical scenes and scenery in the Holy Land and surrouding regions, Egypt and Rome, by Abraham des Amorie van der Hoeven (1798-1855), a 19th century minister, well-known for his eloquence, and professor of theology at the Remonstrant Seminary in Amsterdam (1827).
The work was originally published in 24 issues from 1836 till 1838, here bound together in two parts of 12 issues of 4 plates with a description of one or two pages each, complete with a dedication to the Princess Royal, Anna Paulowna (the sister of Tsar Alexander of Russia and wife of the later King William II of the Netherlands), dated Amsterdam, 27 February 1837, and lists of subscribers. Plate 35 is used as a frontispiece to the first and 93 for the frontispiece of the second part. A second edition appeared in 1870.
The plates were taken over - probably on the initiative of the publisher Beijerinck who asked Amorie van der Hoeven to write the explanatory descriptions - from the English publisher of the Landscape Illustrations of the Bible, containing the plates by the famous English engraver William Finden (1787-1852) the artist who, together with his brother Edward Finden, had established a large school of pupils who worked under their direction and producing the illustrations of many important works such as The Arctic voyages by Murray and Moore's Life and works of Lord Byron, which created a great sensation. The brothers were also employed in engraving the Elgin marbles for the British Museum.
Good copy.- (Some browning and foxing mostly in margins).
