Leyden, Jean Elsevier, 1661. 4to. 19th century half vellum. With 2 folding genealogical tables. (8), 368 pp.

Original edition of the Life of François de La Noue, called Bras-de-Fer or Iron Arm. He was a famous French Huguenot army captain (1531-1591), who in 1569 in a battle near La Rochelle had lost his arm, which by a very handy workman was then replaced by an arm of iron. In 1580, when fighting in the Southern Netherlands, La Noue was taken prisoner by the Spaniards and treated very cruelly. In 1585 he then was released in exchange of the Count of Egmont. De La Noue was a valiant fighter and a protestant of deep and sincere conviction. By his contemporaries, Protestants and Catholics alike, he was highly respected.
The author, Moise Amyraut, or Amurault, in the present work spelled Amirault (1596-1664), was a French protestant theologian who devoted his life and work trying to unite the numerous French Protestant  sections into one French Protestant Church. Only this,  in his opinion, would enable them to come to terms  with the French Catholics. The present work was intended  to be a shining example for all French Protestants. Most of Amyraut's works were published at Paris, only the present work was printed at Leiden by the House of Elzevir. All Amyraut's works are very rare now, as they mostly were only published once.
