![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Paris, Denis Ianot, 1543. Folio. Modern marbled calf, spine richly gilt. With Janot's thistle device on title, dedication "Au Roy", within charming flowered woodcut borders, dedicationary verse underneath within richly ornamental 4-part woodcut borders with the French King's coat-of-arms in lower border, several large white woodcut initials with Janot's thistle, 2 full-page woodcut plates, and 23 woodcuts in text, incl. one large woodcut, all within 4-part ornamental woodcut borders with coat-of-arms in the lower border. (6), 111, (1) lvs. The very rare first edition of the fourth folio of the Amadis. The name of the translator, Seigneur des Essars N. de Herberay, is mentioned in the colophon. De Herberay translated the first eight books. The large woodcut initials again are from the fine white alphabet Janot had made for the Amadis. The smaller woodcut initials all but one are left blank, with a guide-letter only. The two large woodcut plates show the plan and the elaborate façade of the palace of Apolidon, with woodcut figures and distance tables in the margins. The large block of the façade with the crowned initials of François I, Henri II, and Catherine de Médicis was later used in the Vitruvius edition by De Marnef and Cavellat, from 1572. The motto "Acuerdo Oluido", which is found on the titles and several other places of the first folio's is explained in verse at the end of the present book as being the device of the translator. A quatrain in honour of Herberay's Amadis is printed in centre on recto of last blank. Fine copy, with the bookplate of Charles Moncorgé.- (Some old ink numbers in the margins; occasionally some sl. staining).
