Contemp. overlapping vellum, spine with 6 split bands, with small gilt ornaments in the compartments and gilt central ornament on both sides, g.e. With woodcut printer's device on 2 titles, 17 woodcuts in Book 5, and full-page woodcut frontispiece, verso blank, 3 large woodcuts, and 11 woodcuts in Book 6. (6), 194; (8), 208 lvs. Books 5 and 6 of the octavo edition published in the year Groulleau completed the first printing in octavo of the first 12 Books of the Amadis de Gaule. The various books were published and republished separately or in mixed sets. Complete sets, as well of the first folio's as also of the first 12 octavo's, are rarely found. Both Books are richly illustrated with woodcuts and white and black woodcut initials in various style and size. The woodcut frontispiece in Book 6 is printed on verso of the last blank leaf of the preliminary quire. Good copy.- (Binding sl. rubbed, and most of the overlapping parts worn off; few old ink annotations at the beginning of both Books; sl. traces of uses).
