Contemporary vellum, spine ribbed with gilt lozenge-shaped coat-of-arms of the city of Amsterdam in each of the eight compartments, sides with gilt flowered borders alternated with small coats-of-arms of Amsterdam, similar flowered borders on inner panel. With richly engraved title by J. Goerée, 6 double-page engraved maps, 5 by J. and C. Luyken, 1 by J. Goerée, 3 full-page engraved plates and table, and numerous engravings in text in the first part, and 9 double-page engraved maps by Gerard de Broen and double-page table in the second part. (24), 132, (20), 18, (2); (32), 216, (40) pp. First and only edition of Menso Alting the Younger's description of the Low Countries. The work consists of two parts, the first part treating the Low Countries in Antiquity according to classical authors, with fine engraved maps of the area and engravings of relics of Antique Culture, like inscriptions and tombstones, tables and indexes, and in appendix a comment on the Ptolemean map of Great Germany with map. The second part deals with the Medieval period, describing the places in alphabetical order and also with fine engraved maps, a table and indexes. The present copy is of special interest for its rich Amsterdam prize-binding. It also contains the printed school-prize certificate of the Latin School at Amsterdam, with the engraved coat-of-arms of Amsterdam in centre, presented by the rector H. Bosscha to the pupil Petrus Lyndrajer in 1817. The Amsterdam Latin School was founded in 1632 on instigation of Caspar Barlaeus, when Amterdam had become a flourishing city after the fall of Antwerp.
