ALPINUS, Prosper.De Praesagienda Vita & Morte Aegrotantium, Libri Septem. In quibus ars tota Hippocratica praedicendi in aegrotis varios morborum eventus, cum ex veterum Medicorum dogmatis, tum ex longa accurataque observatione, nova methodo elucescit. Cum Praefatione H. Boerhaave. ![]() ![]() ![]() Editio altera Leidensis, cujus Textum recensuit, passim emendavit, supplevit; citata Hippocratis loc Lugd.Bat. I. Severini, 1733. 4to. Modern half morocco, spine ribbed, with title-label. With large folding engraved portrait, mounted on cloth, of Prosper Alpinus, by R. Blokhuysen. (22), 558 (= 564), (46) pp. First edition revised by Gaubius of Alpini's most famous medical work, first published at Venice in 1601. It was based on the work of Hippocrates, Galenus and Aristoteles. The author, Prosper Alpini (1553-1617), practiced as a physician in Campo-St.Pietro, near Padua, where he had studied, but strongly drawn to the study of medicinal plants, particularly wanting to search for balsam, he eagerly accepted a post at Cairo in Egypt. There he practiced for three years, after which he travelled through Egypt, Greece and Crete trying to learn from the people their old knowledge about plants. Then he returned to Venice and ended his career as professor at Padua, where he helped create the famous botanical garden. Alpini also wrote some important books on Egyptian plants and medicine, and on the Egyptian art of embalming, but the present work was judged within the medical world to be his chief d'oeuvre. It was first published in the Netherlands in 1700 on instignation of Herman Boerhaave, who wrote a Foreword to it. The adaptor, Hieronymus David Gaubius, was an internationally renowned Leiden professor in Medicine and Chemistry. The work, in his adaption, was republished at Hamburg in 1734, twice in Venice in 1735, in Frankfurt in 1754, etc. Good copy, from the library of Gordon W. Jones, with his bookplate.
Bibl.Med.Neerl. I, p. 159; Waller 371; Wellcome II, p. 36.
