Early modernist art theory

8vo. Contemp. marbled calf, spine ribbed and richly gilt. XCVI, 384; LXVI, 311, (3) pp.

Rare first edition of Hieronymus van Alphen's adaption for the Netherlands of Riedel's "Theorie der schönen Künste und Wissenschaften". Hieronymus van Alphen, best known for his children's poems, was one of the great promotors of scientific and economical thought of the Enlightment in the Netherlands. He was a serious reader and student, and tried to bring all his knowledge into a single coherent system. Through his literary work he then came to the theoretical reflection on the essence of the literary work of art and the study of aesthetics in general. For this he mainly looked to Germany, where since Baumgarten's "Aesthetica" art-theory virtually expierenced a boom. The present work, far more than presenting Riedel's work to the Dutch public, represents the results of Van Alphen's own studies on the subject, making him into the pioneer of modernism in the Dutch literature. Of special interest is the extensive preface, in which the author gives a full account of the development of his views.
Fine set of an important work.- (Library stamps on first blank lvs.).
