(Germany, ca. 1880). Box, 24 x 19 cm., with chromolithographed plate mounted on lid, showing 3 children going to school, and titled A.B.C. With 105 small wooden bricks, 2 x 2 cm. and 1 cm. high, with letters of the alphabet, printed in capital and low-cast in black on white paper, mounted on top, and including an ä, ö, and ü next to the other vocals.

Rare box of alphabet-bricks, to teach the children to read and spell the words, probably made in Germany. From these children's letter-boxes the game of scrabble probably was derived.
In good condition, but impossible to judge if all the blocks are present.
