First edition of a history of the old Dutch customs at festive dinners and drinking parties, a classic in its field. The first two volumes describe the various old and valued traditions, beautifully illustrated by the festive drinking cups and glasses used, including the popular 'Jacoba-cup' and the cup used by Hugo de Groot at Loevesteyn. The third volume is perhaps still more interesting as it describes the abuse made of certain customs, and explains what is done and what is not done. This part is illustrated by some beautiful but abusive drinking cups and glasses insulting people or leading to excess. The work, based on sound research and ample source material, still is a real goldmine for cultural historians and antiquarians.

Fine set, with a contemporary slip of paper loosely inserted stating the work to be the property of Hugo Cornets de Groot, Council and Burgomaster of the city of Rotterdam, and director of the Rotterdam Chamber of the Dutch East-India Company.
