Verses on birds
[ALBERTSZ, Hendrick].Tydtkorting der Jeugd, of May-Gift, van verscheyde Vogelen, aan Alle eerbaare Jonge Lieden. Eerst aan de Jonkmans. 2. Aan de Jonge Dochters. 3. Stigtelyke Zinnebeelden. Waer agter gevoegt zijn Verscheyde aerdige Vermakelijkheden en Gezangen. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Amsterdam, David Weege, (ca. 1760). Sm.8vo. Overlapping vellum wrappers. With woodcut of a peacock on title, and 28 woodcuts of birds in text. 96 pp. Rare popular children's book by Hendrick Albertsz. (ca.1600-1667), nicknamed Hoejewilt (As-you-like). He was a Mennonite poet from De Rijp and a close friend of the famous water engineer Leeghwater. Hoejewilt also contributed a large number of hymns to the "Rijper Liedboecxken", first published in 1669 and now very rare. The present book contains verses on birds, here nicely depicted on rather primitive woodcuts. These verses are divided into three series. The first series was intended for boys and is illustrated with a series of 12 woodcuts of birds headed by the woodcut of a cock, while the second series was intended for girls and is illustrated with the same series of 12 woodcuts of birds but now headed by a chicken. And the third series, presenting emblematic poetry on birds, is illustrated with 2 woodcuts of birds only. Some miscellaneous popular songs were added at the end, including a song on children's games. The first edition must already have been published around 1620, first under the title: "May-Gift Van Verscheyde Vogelen". The addition: "Tydtkorting der Jeugd" seems to have been used only for the present edition. All the woodcuts were newly made as well, and compared with the earlier editions, which contained 22 woodcuts in text, is our edition enlarged with six more woodcuts in text, apart from the woodcut on title. Fine copy.- (Few slight stains; some wormholes in inner margins).
Buijnsters, BNK, 1688 (listed under "gifts and presents", but referred to also under natural history and science); De Vries, Emblemata, 254; not in Landwehr, Emblem & Fable Books; Scheurleer, Liedboeken, p. 200; cf. Cat. Van Rijn 1164 (ed. Kannewet of ca. 1720, and ed. Wed. G. de Groot of ca. 1725, listed under children's games for the poem on children's games it contains); Mennonite Encyclopedia II, p. 772.
