Original edition the the auction catalogue of one of the most famous libraries of the 'Ancien régime': the library of Henri-François d'Aguesseau (1668-1751), continued by his son Jean-Baptist-Paulin d'Aguesseau who had died on the 8th of July 1784 at the age of 83. The founder of the Library, Henri-François d'Aguesseau has helt high positions during the first half of the eighteenth century: two times he was appointed 'Chancelier de France'. Apart from that he was a lettered man and a great bibliophile. Also the booktrade in Paris in the first half of the eitheenth century was under his direct control.
After an extensive introduction (p. iii-xvi), follows the Table (p. xvii-xxxvi). The catalogue comprises no less than 5583 items (Theology, nrs. 1-918; Law, nrs. 919-1961; Sciences and Arts, nrs. 1962-2747; Belles-Lettres, nrs. 2748-3532; History, nrs. 3533-5446; Supplement, nrs. 5447-5583), followed by an Index of the authors (pp. 1-80) and the order of the auction, beginning on 14 February and going on till 2 May 1785 (pp. 1-12).
