Haarlem, Thomas Fonteyn, for Jacob Aertsz. Colom, 1651. 8vo. Contemporary vellum. With richly engraved frontispiece, and author's portrait by R. à Persyn after C. Saftleven. [24], 610 pp.

First edition of a rare and curious educational work teaching the correct and firm arguments against all the generally accepted opinions about sciences and arts, by Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa Von Nettesheim (ca. 1486-1535). It is the Dutch translation of the famous sophistical work De Incertitudine et Vanitate Scientiarum invecta, first published at Antwerp in 1530. The book on the one hand offers an almost encyclopedic teaching, as it describes all what is known of sciences and arts, but on the other hand the book stresses the bad effects these sciences and arts have on human happiness, therewith offering a moral teaching of the insecurity and vanity of worldly knowledge and talents. The book is clearly arranged and the text is soundly phrased, in fact, the work is perfectly suited to educate youth to become free and independent individuals.

Repaired tear in first free endpaper. Fine copy with manuscript owner's entry reading: 'Ce livre appartient a Daniel Lalmand, a Roterdam le 22 fevrier 1700i.', followed by the incantation: 'quij ce livre deroberas, par son col pandu seras, le jibet sera sa maison, car je en sera raisson, mon amij van moy mon livre, si tu veaux selon Dieu vivre'.
