First edition of a famous work on the natural history, especially the shells of Senegal by Michel Adanson (1727-1806). The first part contains the account of his voyage and explorations in Senegal during five years, from 1749 till 1753, and the second part is entirely devoted to the history of the shells of Senegal, which are also most accurately illustrated on 19 engraved plates. The work opened for its author the doors of the French Academy of Sciences when he was just thirty years old. Still, the present book was only to be a first abstract of a much larger planned work that was to consist of eight volumes, but which however, was never published. In 1773 the work was translated into German by Franz von Schreber. It still is one of the most esteemed works in the history of conchology.
