New York, Baltimore, Samuel Wood & Sons, & Co., (ca. 1820). Small 4to. Original wrappers, with a small woodcut farm-scene on frontcover, and woodcut of a bird on back cover. With woodcuts of a girl with a sheep, and birds on title, and woodcut pictorial alphabet at the head of 13 pages. 16 pp.

A very attractive American primer, with an alphabet in large type on verso title, alphabets in different types, the vowels and the consonants, and the numbers on the third page, and spelling exercises underneath the pictorial alphabet on the rest of the pages. Judging by their vulnerability, printed on thin paper, and with a format of 8 x 10 cm. only, these little primers must be very rare.

Fine copy.
Gumuchian 221, and illustrated on plate 50; cf. Haviland-Coughlan pp. 26-30 (1st ed. of 1806, completely reproduced).
