Popular A B book, published by the Dutch educational society "Tot Nut van 't Algemeen" (For Use to All), founded in 1784 by Jan Nieuwenhuyzen to promote the moral and social principles of the Enlightment in the Netherlands, and especially to improve and broaden general education among the people. The society published its first A B book in 1788. The present edition is newly adapted after the latest official spelling-rules. This A B book was meant to complement, and if possible, to replace the old popular "Haneboek", which it somewhat resembles in outer appearance, but without the familiar woodcuts. It was to teach the mass of children and illiterate adults to read and count in a more enlightened way, and by a better method.
The little book starts on verso title with several alphabets, in Gothic, Roman, Italics, and Civilité types, the vocals and consonants, various punctuation-marks, and the numbers in Roman and Arabic. Then follow gradually advancing spelling exercises, and from page 10 the reading exercises start, containing partly prayers, before and after meal, before and after school, etc., and partly good advices for moral and social behaviour. At the end there are two  short birthday-poems. It is one of the few more modern A B books without any illustrations at all.
