Berlin, Winckelmann et fils, (ca. 1840). Oblong 8vo. Orig. lithographed boards. With 26 full-page lithographed plates, beautifully finished by hand, showing richly illustrated and decorated capitals of the alphabet. 64 pp. text.

Beautiful illustrated French A B book published at Berlin, probably for export into the French market, but also very probably for use of the German children  too, as it was still in vogue in Europe in the 19th century for the better classes to speak French. The book starts with a very attractive series of coloured lithographed plates on the letters of the alphabet, but only thereafter the A B book seriously starts, with alphabets in different types and sizes, the vocals, consonants, numbers, and gradually advancing spelling exercises, followed by the various reading marks.
On page 13 the reading exercises start, in large letter types, and again an alphabet with all sorts of different words to each letter, after which the reading exercises advance into short stories, fables, and dialogues. The last page contains multification-tables.

Good copy of a rare A B book.- (Binding rubbed; sl. traces of use).
Not in Gumuchian, nor in Ségolène le Men; NUC lists 1 copy only, dated ca. 1810.
