With 35 popular woodcuts, printed on both sides of 9 lvs., mostly numbered and titled underneath, of which 4 full-page, the rest with 2 to 1 page, and one almost full-page on verso of text-leaf, mostly showing professions and military costumes, some caricatural, and one full-page showing the arrival of Santa Claus in "het Land van Waes", signed by Porre, and the one on verso text-leaf showing a father with a child on his arm pointing to a map of the Netherlands. (6), 64, (2) pp. text Unrecorded AB book in disguise, advertising itself as the first appearance of an almanac which will be published yearly. Almanacs are easily the oldest and most popular genre of all popular books, and on top of that, this almanac offered itself as a Santa Claus-gift for children. It is made further extra attractive by a large number of popular prints. But the Santa Claus Almanac really presents a most solid and extensive A B book. On verso title a word to the "teacher of youth" is found, explaining the usefullness of the book. Then follow two lvs. with a calendar and on verso of the 2nd leaf, alphabets are given in 6 different types, in Roman, italics and civilité. After that comes the alphabet with 2 letters to each page, with the letter in capital on top, a 2-line verse on a chosen word and an instructive story on this word in the column underneath, on pp. 1-13. On page 14 alphabets in 8 different types are given, in 2 columns, now also including the Gothic lettertype. On page 15, the explanation of the vocals and consonants is given in 2 columns. Then follow the spelling exercises, spelling and reading exercises in questions and answers on the Catholic religion, and more reading exercises on children's duties and morals, pp. 16-32. This is followed by more advanced and entertaining reading exercises in general instructive dialogues, educational short stories and aphorisms, pp. 33-54. Then one leaf with proverbs and an unnumbered leaf with the numbers, some exercises, and a list with the numbers in words, in Arabic, and in Roman, all on one page. On verso then is found the woodcut with the map of the Netherlands, followed by lessons in geography, pp. 57-64. All text is printed in 2 columns. Unfortunately a much used copy, rebound about a century ago, and possibly incomplete.- (All woodcuts are bound together in front, one at the end; the last geography-part is misbound inbetween the prints; rather frayed at edges; dog-eared).
Unrecorded.
