First Dutch edition of a popular children's reading book telling about the great exploits of famous men from the past. This genre was considered most educational in all countries of Europe. The present is about Christopher Columbus and the discovery of the New World, translated from the English by a Dutch school-teacher and head of a primary school at Velzen.
John Stevens Cabot Abbott (1805-1877) was an American historian, pastor and writer, and brother of children's books author Jacob Abbott (1803-1879). The present Abbott is best known for his histories of Napoleon Bonaparte (1855), the Civil War (1863-1866), and Frederick II, the Great, (1871).
